WHY SUSTAINABILITY MATTERS AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR LIVE EVENTS.
Sustainability is one of those words.
It gets thrown around a lot, is applied in just about every context and can be as broad as it can be specific. It is used to mean green, eco-friendly, and environmentally conscious. But why is sustainability so important, and what does it mean for live events?
Simply put, sustainability means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. From an event perspective, it means being able to bring people together while still preserving the planet’s resources to ensure that humans can continue gathering for decades to come.
Sustainability is paramount to Tectonic, and we think it should be rising in your list of daily considerations, too. Here are just a few reasons why:
1 – HAVING CLEAN AIR TO BREATHE
Pollution in the atmosphere caused by C02 emissions has accelerated the greenhouse effect, ozone depletion, and climate change. Humanities’ rapid progress since the industrial revolution has afforded us great technology, but the excessive burning of fossil fuels has affected our air quality, weather patterns, and even life expectancy.
2 – PRODUCING ENOUGH FOOD
Soil is the basis for sustenance for 7 billion people. It preserves clean water, helps regulate the climate, and protects plant and animal biodiversity. Soil degradation as a result of chemical fertilizers leads to water and land pollution, chemicals in our food, and threatens our global food supply.
3 – PROTECTING THE PLANET’S NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS
Deforestation caused by farming, logging, palm oil production, and urban development (the majority of this happening to the Amazon Rainforest) is a concerning matter. It can cause global biodiversity loss, climate change, desertification, mass extinction, and threatens indigenous populations that rely on those areas.
4 – LIVING, HAPPY, HEALTHY LIFESTYLES
Two hundred years ago, there were less than a billion people on Earth. Today, there are 7.8 billion people on the planet, and we are consuming more natural resources than the earth can provide while generating more trash than we know what to do with. If humans continue to use resources and produce waste at the rate we have been, we will be met with increasing challenges surrounding global food supply, clean water, stable city infrastructure, and health and disease.
So, it is clear that the need to integrate sustainable practices into business and daily life is urgent. Sustainability matters, and if we don’t collectively take steps towards preserving the future of our planet, we could soon face deadly consequences.
As a sustainable event consulting firm, Tectonic is excited to be on the leading edge of a long overdue transition into more environmentally conscious business decisions when it comes to bringing people together. Tectonic collaborates with event organizers around the globe to integrate leading sustainability strategies that deliver targeted goals with minimal environmental impact.
Because the way we gather matters and want to ensure we can continue to come together for years to come.
Here are some of the ways Tectonic plans to integrate sustainability at live events:
◎ Waste Diversion Strategy:
Managing event waste through 3 crucial diversion streams–Recycle, Compost, and Donation!
◎ Carbon Offset Plan:
Providing fans and staff a platform to network for rideshares, sourcing event materials locally whenever possible, and consolidating trips to and from the event site.
◎ Service Initiatives:
Empowering fans to give back by organizing service initiatives that positively impact the planet and community.
◎ Reusable Cup Program:
Events have it in their power to eliminate single-use with reusable cup programs and a commitment to less landfill waste.
We know that the decisions we make today will impact the world we live in for decades to come. We hope that our efforts will help reduce the event industry’s footprint and ultimately lay the ground for a more sustainable future.
