THE FUTURE OF EVENTS: TESTING, EVENT BUBBLES, AND THE NEW WAY FORWARD.

Just like event lovers everywhere, Tectonic is grappling with the decision of where and how to meet. We want to bring our community together in person, but understand the time still isn’t right to do so. Until then, we have been educating ourselves on future safety standards so we can help organizers throw events and still keep everyone healthy.

There are many COVID-19 safety protocols that diminish the risk of gathering. Viewing pods, masks, and social distancing, for instance, are new essential features to any event. The trouble with these measures, however, is that compliance is a difficult variable to predict – organizers must be prepared for attendees who don’t follow the rules. The most effective way of stopping the spread of the virus at events is to prevent contagious people from attending in the first place.

We are hopeful that with the new vaccines on the market, we can soon get back to doing what we love without the fear of illness. While there is much hope, things will be slow going. The vaccine is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and there are many variables that must be addressed as events begin to roll out. For folks who don’t have access to the vaccine, or decide not to take it, testing is an alternative prerequisite to gathering.

We have seen coronavirus testing protocols put into effect in other industries that bring people together. International airlines, for instance, are now requiring a negative test before permitting passengers onboard any flight entering the United States. It is also widely known that industry leader Ticketmaster is developing a system to link event attendees’ electronic tickets to their vaccine status, negative test results, or any other info that event organizers determine to grant access.

While pre-event testing greatly diminishes the risk of transmitting or catching the virus at an event, each attendee is still taking a calculated risk until vaccination is widespread. The past year has shown us the insidious nature of coronavirus. For instance, you may contract the virus but test negative if your sample was collected too early during the incubation period and still be contagious, unknowingly spreading the virus at the event in question. Not to mention the risk of coming in contact with the virus on your way to the show or attending under the pretense of a false-negative test result.

Tectonic seeks to address the tricky incubation period, post-test contraction, and false-negative dilemmas by offering event organizers a protocol that takes safety a step further – A two-part testing system where ticket purchasers test a week prior to the event, are expected to self-isolate leading up to the show, and take a rapid response test once arriving to site. With this system, ticket purchasers can be worry-free knowing that deliberate strides are being made to create a Covid-free event “bubble”.

In the Summer and Fall of 2020, Tectonic directed 4 events in Northeast Pennsylvania that successfully utilized a 2-part COVID-19 testing system with on-site safety measures for all attendees, staff, talent, and vendors. This system was the first of its kind and received positive acclaim from the likes of Forbes, Billboard, Pollstar, Pitchfork and EDM.com. This same system will be put to scale this fall at Elements Festival.

In a post-pandemic world, throwing events is not just a matter of keeping fans healthy, but giving them the peace of mind to attend. There is no doubt that social distancing, masks, hygiene, and other precautions make coming together less risky. Creating tested event bubbles takes these safety measures to the next level. While we are all eager to get back to doing what we love, we know that if it is going to be done, it must be done right. As workers in a field where precision, candor, and readiness are principal, careful Covid Safety Operations are the new way forward, and Tectonic is ready to lead the industry into a future of responsible events.

Now we want to ask you: What do you think? Is a 2 part COVID-19 test and self-isolation leading up to the event worthwhile for you to get back to doing what you love? Give us your honest feedback HERE.
